The Real Tart (Taranaki Art) Gallery: A Gem of a Community Art Space
In April 2006, the Real TArt (Taranaki Art) Gallery moved to its present location in the historic Masters Building near New Plymouth's coastal walkway and adjacent to the Puke Ariki Museum and Library complex. The open plan of this refitted warehouse building creates a space conducive to the display of contemporary art, and at Real TArt the focus is on the display of work by local artists, be it in the form of specialised exhibitions or individual pieces.

Mountain and Sea – Landscapes by Eben Bryan

Looking at the realistic landscapes painted by New Plymouth artist, Eben Bryan, it would be hard to guess he is colour blind.
Some people viewing his works have commented that “they must be photographs”, or that they are images projected onto the canvas, then painted over. The perfection of his paintings belies that they are free-hand, and that Eben doesn’t see the world in full colour.
“ I have always done drawing but I didn’t get into painting until I was older because of my colour blindness. When I did I started out painting in black and white and gradually built up my use of colour”, Eben explains.
His attention then turned to the painting Taranaki landscapes such as those which feature in his exhibition “Mountain and Sea”, which opens at Real TArt Gallery on Wednesday, May 2.
“I had to overcome my fear of colour to try and recreate all the wonderful colours of nature, which can be quite daunting when you can only try and imagine what they are. Through a lot of trial and error I’ve become comfortable with a selection that seem to work for me’, Eben explains.
“My paintings aren’t intended to be an accurate or photo realistic depiction of a scene. They’re more a representation of how I see the world, or in some cases, how I think the world should look.”
“Mountain and Sea” will be on in Real TArt’s Upper Gallery until May 31.

Administered by the Taranaki Arts Community Trust, since 2006 the Real TART Gallery has been housed in the historic 'Masters Building' in Egmont Street near New Plymouth's coastal walkway. This new location has enabled the expansion of the previous exhibition space and the creation of a community gallery and arts space serving the Taranaki region.
The Gallery accepts and exhibits the work of Taranaki artists; it offers a regularly changing schedule of shows from emerging and established artists, as well as special exhibitions.
Taranaki artists are encouraged to exhibit their work at the Gallery through a system of monthly wall hire or by showing individual works.
